Today we’re happy to announce an upgrade to PlayFab’s matchmaking to use the proven capabilities of Xbox Live’s SmartMatch. This marks the first time the firmly established technology of Xbox Live matchmaking has been available outside of Xbox Live, and will be available to you everywhere via PlayFab.
The new PlayFab matchmaking feature allows you to create matchmaking queues which players will join to find matches. These queues can be customized to have your players trade off as little or as much wait time as you want for improved quality. Want to throw players together as fast as you can? Rather have them wait a bit to find tight skill matches? Or maybe you want to group up players in the same region, have them wait up to thirty seconds for a particular character class to join, and require at least three of the four have mics? These are precisely the sort of simple or complex problems the new matchmaking feature can handle.
Right now, this matchmaking feature is in preview for developers looking to help us kick the tires and give us feedback. If you are interested in early access to this feature set, please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org or request through the forums to gain access to Game Manager configuration. We are looking to officially release this by the end of the year when we intend on delivering still more power and flexibility.
