Game Server Hosting and Matchmaking Update!

PlayFab has long offered custom game server hosting, so that developers don’t have to worry about any aspect of server management - they just upload and configure their build, choose regions, and we take care of the rest. With our latest update, developers can now host their servers wherever they like, and on any operating system. Want to run Linux based servers with your own provider? No problem.

There’s a complete tutorial on usage, but simply put, we now provide Web API calls that you can use to register a server with PlayFab’s matchmaker service and communicate status changes with it, so that your externally hosted servers are available to your users for game sessions.

And since we were already updating the matchmaker to support this, we also added a tagging system, for more fine control over your matchmaking. This means that you can now set custom tags on a server instance that can be used as filters when searching for a game session. To use them, first set the tags for the server, to define its attributes. Then, in your call to Matchmake, use the TagFilter property to define the tags that must (and/or must not) be on the server. So if you want to give players the option to find a game running a certain map, but only if team damage isn’t turned on, you can now do exactly that.
